Skin Renewal for the Whole You

At IABR, microneedling with SkinPen® is offered by Gagan, our experienced nurse practitioner, as part of our commitment to whole-patient care. Because SkinPen® can be performed on virtually any area of the body—including post-surgical scars on the chest, abdomen, and donor sites—it is a natural fit for patients recovering from breast-related surgery.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin renewal treatment that uses ultra-fine needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin's surface. These microchannels activate the body’s natural wound-healing process, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.

As new fibers form in response to the controlled micro-injury, skin becomes visibly smoother, firmer, and more even in tone and texture; no heat, lasers, or harsh chemicals.

At IABR, we use SkinPen®, the world's first FDA-cleared microneedling device and the most clinically studied microneedling pen on the market. Here’s what sets it apart:

  • In a pivotal clinical trial, 90% of subjects showed a clinically meaningful improvement in acne scar appearance after just three treatments
  • Medical-grade safety thanks to proprietary single-use BioSheath™ sterile cartridge, eliminating any risk of cross-contamination between patients
  • Results are driven entirely by your body's own regenerative process, and continue to develop over weeks following each session

By creating precise micro-channels in post-surgical scar tissue, SkinPen® breaks down dense, fibrous bundles and encourages the skin to lay down new, organized collagen. This results in scars that are softer, flatter, and more seamlessly integrated with the surrounding skin. For our reconstruction patients, this is particularly meaningful.

Benefits of Microneedling with SkinPen®

  • Refined Texture & Minimized Pores: Smooth rough patches, reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, and achieve skin that improves incrementally over each session.
  • Restored Firmness: Collagen and elastin production decline naturally with age and accelerate after surgical trauma. SkinPen® rebuilds both, lifting and tightening areas that have lost density over time.
  • Scar Remodeling: IABR brings reconstructive anatomy expertise to every scar treatment, which is a layer of clinical context you won't find at a standard medical spa.
  • Even Tone & Radiant Glow: Reduce hyperpigmentation and dullness for a brightness that builds progressively with each session. SkinPen® is safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types (I–VI), including patients who are not candidates for laser or IPL due to hyperpigmentation risk.
  • Minimal Downtime: Most patients experience redness for 24–48 hours and can apply mineral makeup the following day.

Are You a Candidate for Microneedling with SkinPen®?

Microneedling with SkinPen® is a versatile treatment suitable for a wide range of patients. You may be an ideal candidate if you:

  • Want to improve skin texture, tone, or firmness on the face, neck, or body
  • Are looking to minimize the appearance of post-surgical or post-mastectomy scars
  • Have acne scarring or uneven skin tone
  • Prefer a treatment that does not use heat, lasers, or harsh chemicals
  • Have a deeper skin tone and have been advised to avoid laser treatments due to hyperpigmentation risk
  • Are in the maintenance or recovery phase following breast reconstruction and want to feel radiant from head to toe

There are a few contraindications that your care team will review during your personal consultation, including active skin infections, open wounds in the treatment area, and certain dermatological conditions.

Is SkinPen® safe for my skin tone?

What makes SkinPen® different from other microneedling devices?

SkinPen® is the world's first FDA-cleared microneedling device and remains the most clinically studied option available. Made in the USA by Bellus Medical, it features a proprietary single-use BioSheath™ sterile cartridge. This safety mechanism eliminates the risk of cross-contamination and is not found in most competing devices. It is a true medical-grade instrument, not a cosmetic roller or unregulated pen.

Is the treatment painful?

Most patients find it very manageable. We apply a topical numbing cream before beginning, and the sensation during treatment is typically described as a light vibration or mild scratching. Sharp or significant pain is uncommon.

How many sessions do I need?

While many patients notice a brightness improvement after a single session, we typically recommend a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart—especially when targeting deeper concerns such as post-surgical scars or significant texture issues.

Can SkinPen® really improve surgical scars?

By creating precise micro-channels in scar tissue, SkinPen® prompts the body to replace old, fibrous scar tissue with new, organized collagen. Over the course of a treatment series, scars become noticeably softer, flatter, and more closely matched in tone and texture to the surrounding skin.

Is there downtime?

Minimal. Expect redness similar to a mild sunburn for 24–48 hours. Most patients return to their normal activities the next day and can apply mineral makeup within 24 hours of treatment.

Is SkinPen® safe for my skin tone?

Absolutely. Because SkinPen® is mechanically driven—not light- or heat-based—it is safe and effective for all Fitzpatrick skin types, including deeper skin tones that may be at risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with laser or IPL treatments. This is one of SkinPen®'s most important clinical differentiators.
