What Are the Benefits of Autologous Breast Reconstruction?

Here at the Institute for Advanced Breast Reconstruction, we specialize almost exclusively in autologous breast reconstruction techniques. Not only does this give us the ability to offer safer and more reliable alternatives to implant-based reconstruction, but it enables us to significantly elevate the standards of care we can offer to patients who have undergone or are planning to undergo radiation therapy.

Our patients love autologous breast reconstruction for the following reasons:

  • Implants are optional and can be avoided completely if desired.
  • Autologous reconstruction improves patient satisfaction by tightening and toning excess tissue and fat in the donor area.
  • The use of the patient’s own tissues creates a softer, more natural reconstructed breast.
  • Patients can avoid the need for repeat surgical procedures.

Can I Have Breast Reconstruction After a Mastectomy?

Women who have suffered from breast cancer and have had a mastectomy can choose to have breast reconstruction, whether they prefer their original breast appearance or an enhanced shape and size.

Women who would like to have breast reconstruction after their mastectomy have a choice about the timing of their procedure. They may choose to have their reconstruction as a part of their mastectomy, or they may want their breast reconstruction after their mastectomy incisions are healed and their breast cancer therapy treatment is complete. Both options have pluses and minuses and can be discussed with Dr. Srinivasa as a part of your consultation.

Women considering breast reconstruction after their mastectomy should meet the following requirements:

  • Are in good physical and mental health.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Have realistic expectations about what this procedure can achieve.
  • Feel a breast augmentation will enhance their confidence or quality of life.

What Types of Reconstruction Do You Offer?

Reconstruction with Implants

We’re proud to offer a number of traditional implant-based breast reconstruction procedures, including a hybrid procedure that can combine autologous and implant-based reconstruction techniques. We typically recommend that patients consider reconstruction with implants when an increase in bust size is required, as this is not always possible with a tissue flap procedure.

Flap-Based Reconstruction

Thanks to her fellowship training in highly advanced microsurgery, Dr. Srinivasa is one of the few practitioners to specialize in autologous, flap-based breast reconstruction. After carefully removing a section of tissue, muscle, and skin from one area of the body, Dr. Srinivasa can essentially transplant it to the chest wall, reattaching blood vessels through microsurgery. This creates a softer, more natural breast mound made from your very own bodily tissues.

Lumpectomy Reconstruction

Patients who have undergone a lumpectomy can be left with issues like asymmetry, deflation, or a number of other cosmetic concerns. Lumpectomy reconstruction enables Dr. Srinivasa to restore your full and symmetrical bust after a mastectomy procedure, so you can once more see your ideal silhouette in the mirror each day.
